Kyiv, 4 feb 2025 – The Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, has signed an agreement on behalf of Italy with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to launch a €2 million project aimed at enhancing the energy resilience of Ukrainian cities.

Funded by Italy, this initiative supports Ukraine’s reconstruction towards a more sustainable and decentralized energy system, in line with the “Build Back Better” principle, promoting efficiency and security. The signing ceremony was attended by Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Roman Andarak, as well as representatives from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and UNEP.

“The project includes a detailed analysis of opportunities for integrating renewable energy sources into Ukraine’s energy system, focusing on assessing the potential of photovoltaic solar power and the development of microgrids to enhance urban energy autonomy. Advanced technological tools will be explored to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption, with the goal of creating a more resilient urban energy planning model,” explained Ambassador Formosa.

“One of the key aspects of the project is training and technology transfer, involving Italian and Ukrainian experts to develop local expertise in sustainable energy management. Additionally, the program will support the Ukrainian government in shaping long-term policies for the energy transition and attracting investments in the renewable energy sector,” he added.

The project, developed in collaboration with UNEP, is part of Italy’s broader commitment to supporting Ukraine’s recovery and energy security, with a total of €125 million allocated through joint initiatives and strategic partnerships with local and international institutions.

Pietro Pipi, Head of AICS Kyiv, stated: “This project is a concrete step towards building a more resilient energy system for Ukraine, aligned with European standards. It is not just about developing energy communities but addressing a broader sustainability challenge, including financing and planning future developments.”
